IV sedation is so effective because when the visit is complete, most people feel like they were asleep because the medications used greatly reduce anxiety, and the majority of patients don't remember much of the procedure performed. This makes it feel as though the appointment was much shorter than it actually was.

Often times other offices use terms such as "sleep dentistry" or "twilight sleep" when talking about sedation. The patient isn't actually "sleeping," but rather in a state of relaxation. The patient has control of his/her breathing, reflexes and will also be able to understand the dentist and respond to his requests.

The main advantage is that the medication used during IV sedation is effective much more quickly than in pill form, so it allows the dentist to use additional dosing if needed to achieve a deeply relaxed level of sedation and tailor it to the patient's needs.
